Phragmites Control Program
An invasive plant/weed that thrives in the Suisun Marsh.
Phragmites australis or common reed is an invasive plant that thrives in the Suisun Marsh. The SRCD has developed an annual program to help landowners gain control of this pest plant. Grants received by the SRCD help offset glyphosate-based herbicide (RoundUpâ or generic equivalent) application costs. The SRCD usually orders the generic equivalent due to lower cost. Costs vary from year to year, depending on available grant funds and price of the herbicide itself. The SRCD offers herbicide in 2 1/2 gallon jugs and 30 gallon barrels for terrestrial (over dry land) and aquatic (over water) applications.
This program supports opportunities for hand application as well as aerial application. SRCD will coordinate aerial spraying for those ownerships that wish to participate. Landowners will be billed for the actual helicopter time and herbicide used for aerial application on their property, along with any herbicide ordered for hand application.
For the aerial application program a detailed map showing Phragmites patch location(s) must be provided to SRCD with an estimate of the total acreage of Phragmites to be treated. Aerial application is initiated in late July (weather permitting) and is prohibited over water.
Once the landowner has accepted delivery of herbicide for hand application it is REQUIRED that they report to the SRCD by the end of every month until all herbicide is used so the SRCD can report the amount of herbicide used to the Solano County Agricultural Commissioner’s office. This is necessary for the SRCD to keep their operators identification number and therefore be able to offer this cost-share program. Letters for this program are available in mid-May to early June. All herbicide orders are due by the beginning of July.
